Cedar bowl with turquoise
Dramatic cedar bowl with turquoise-filled crack. In Japan, cracks in pottery are filled and repaired with gold and silver. Similarly, when I am fortunate enough to find a naturally occurring crack or void in a piece of timber, I like to fill it with complementary materials like alabaster, crushed seashells, or lapis lazuli. In this case, I chose man-made turquoise to highlight the crack rather than try to disguise it.
The shape of the bowl is simple in order to let the color and grain patterns stand alone. Only a lip at the top breaks the clean line of the exterior.
The bowl can be used to hold dry items, like keys, knickknacks, or snacks.
As a gift, it is sure to be appreciated and will draw many compliments.
The bowl measures about 8-1/2" by 4" and is finished with food-safe oil and beeswax.
