Small sycamore tray with mussel-shell inlay
A handy sized tray made from sycamore wood whose rim is inlaid with hand-crushed mussel shells.
First, the tray was turned nearly to completion. Then a channel was cut into the rim of the tray to accept the crushed shells. The shell material was carefully placed by hand into the channel and then glued. It was then polished to create a smooth finish.
The tray can be put to any number of uses. A serving tray for snacks and other food items. A receptacle for keys, jewelry, or knick-knacks.
If used for food, clean it by washing and drying by hand, leaving it out overnight to dry completely. Do NOT put it into a dishwasher, oven, or microwave.
If you ever feel it needs spiffing up, apply a little food-safe oil, wait a few minutes, then buff it off. Alternatively, if left untreated it will develop a patina that improves with age.
The tray’s measurements are about 1” high, with an interior of about 6-1/4” across and the exterior about 7-1/8”, weighing in at about 5 oz.
