Hickory platter
Beautiful platter made of hickory and hand-crushed mussel shells. The original piece of timber had some naturally occurring voids which were cleaned out and filled with authentic mussel shell. The warm tones of the hickory are complemented by the blacks, greys and whites of the shells. The filled pattern on the bottom of the platter looks like a tree, perhaps a hickory tree.
The platter sits slightly elevated off the table to aid in picking it up. In the same vein, a subtle ogee curve was added to the outside of the flaring wall to provide more of a holding surface.
The platter’s exterior measurements are about 11” by 1” and it is finished with food-safe linseed oil and beeswax.
It can be used as a fruit tray, or to hold remotes, keys, and eyeglasses. It can also serve as a striking display piece. And, of course, it will make a much-appreciated gift.
